RASCAL Scholarships Presented!

“Seniors Helping Seniors to Learn to Use and Enjoy Their Computers” has been the motto of RASCAL for twenty years. This club recently added “Seniors Helping Students” to its credo with the presentation of two scholarships to Rogue Community College Students.
At the May 17 RASCAL meeting, two $500 scholarships were presented to RCC students Terence Conrad and Robert Minter. President Galen Garretson began the presentation by giving a brief history of the scholarship fund. Over a year ago, longtime members Lou and Joann Garrotto began the Footprints committee as a means of expanding RASCAL’s presence in the Rogue Valley. The scholarship fund grew out of the Footprints committee as a way of giving back to a community that has been supportive of our club. Due to the generosity of RASCAL members, by February of this year over $1,000 had been collected from individual donations, and the members voted to fund two $500 scholarships.

When Lou was waylaid by unsuccessful hip surgery,
Ron Willing took the helm and was instrumental in completing all the necessary paperwork and working with the RCC Foundation to fund the scholarships.
Jennifer Wheatley the Executive Director of the RCC Foundation also spoke.
Jennifer made two points during her talk: the word “believe” was universal in the scholarship recipients’ gratitude that someone believed in them enough to help; and the average age of an RCC student is 33. RCC has gone beyond being an institution of higher learning for those fresh out of high school. It has expanded to also become the domain of older and returning students ho are seeking a better life through education.
Jennifer introduced the two RASCAL scholarship recipients, Terence Conrad and Robert Minter. Both Terry and Bob are Grants Pass residents, have families, are active in their community, and are returning students working toward an AA degree in Computer Science.

Terry’s major is internet services/digital graphics, and Bob’s focus is as a computer support technician. After earning his AA, Bob plans to complete his transfer credits and enroll at an Oregon four-year university to obtain his bachelor’s degree. Terry and Bob each spoke to the assembled RASCAL members and thanked them for the support that will enable them to build a better life for themselves and their families. Appropriately enough, during the general meeting program that followed the scholarship presentations, Terry raised his hand and answered a question that had stumped everyone in the meeting hall.

This is not the end of the story. Thanks to the continuing generosity of RASCAL members, next year’s scholarship fund is already well on its way.
