Virus News - July 2010

Fake IRS email curtesy of Judy Engel:
Today I received an email from the IRS saying that I had a refund waiting for me if I would fill out the attached request form. I contacted the IRS and reported this phishing attempt. The following information may be of interest and will prevent you from becoming a victim:
 
Please note that the IRS does not contact individuals by email.
Therefore, if you received an email claiming to be from the IRS it is a phishing attempt and should be reported to us.

The IRS values your report, and encourages individuals to report future IRS phishing/fraud to phishing@irs.gov so that we can handle these incidents and limit the number of possible victims.
 

Lesson learned: DO NOT EVER GIVE YOUR USER ID OR PASSWORD TO
                            ANYONE IN AN EMAIL.

10 Quick Fixes for your Security Nightmares

There are some really good ideas in this article. There is more protection available than most of us know about. This article deserves scrutinizing.

Fix 1: Patch Over the Software Bull's-Eye - Keep your antivirus and malware software up to date.

Fix 2: Find the Other Holes - Let some available utilities find them for you.

Fix 3: Let the Latest Browsers Fight for You - Check out Firefox 3 and Opera 9.5.

Fix 4: Sidestep Social Engineering - Have your suspicious downloads scanned.

Fix 5: Get the Jump on Fast-Moving Malware - "any antivirus program worth its salt today uses proactive detection that doesn't require a full signature to spot sneaky malware." There is a note here for AVG users.

Fix 6: Rescue Your Inbox From Spam - Some interesting ideas here - will have to try some.

Fix 7: Develop an Antiphishing Habit - for example "never to click a link in any e-mail message to access your financial accounts".

Fix 8: Keep Your Own Site Safe - It's not a good time to run a Web site.

Fix 9: Make Your Passwords Secure--And Easy to Remember - "use strong, unique passwords".

Fix 10: Get Extra Cleaning Help for Stubborn Infections - "Many antivirus makers offer free and easy online scans through your Web browser".
