System Restore - by Lou Lyons

This is for those of you whose computer is working just the way you want it to work. If that's not the case, get some help to get it working properly, but if it already is, then this is for you.

Windows Me and Windows XP both have a feature called System Restore. Once you enable this feature and set a "restore point", then if something gets messed up (usually after installing a new program, or downloading something from the Net), System Restore will put your system back to the "restore point" when everything was working properly. Read your HELP section or read a manual to learn how to do this. It's really pretty simple and will save you a lot of headaches as time goes on.

For those of you (including me) who prefer Windows 98, things are a little more difficult. The system restore ability in Windows 98 is very complex and it's easier to either buy a program called GoBack, or keep a good set of backups on hand. However, there is a feature called System File Checker which can help fix a lot of problems. Simply click START, RUN and then type in "sfc" (without the quotes). When the program pops up, configure it to your preference, and tell it to "scan for altered files". If you've never done this, a long list will appear. Tell it to "update" your list.

Remember, this is for a properly working system. That will start you out from scratch and from then on, whenever your system misbehaves, running that program will tell you what files have been corrupted or altered and give you the option to revert to the last version of the file you select. You may need your Windows disk or your printer install disk on hand to restore a corrupted file. It's not as good as System Restore or GoBack, but it will fix a lot of problems for you. If you're not comfortable with the choices presented, simply cancel the operation and use RascalTechHelp for some advice.
